Tourmaline is celebrated for its extraordinary diversity of color, displaying one of the widest color ranges of any gemstone. The name tourmaline derives from the Sinhalese toramalli, referring to mixed or multicolored gemstones. Its extraordinary range of colors also meant that tourmaline was historically mistaken for other precious gemstones. Green tourmalines were once believed to be emeralds, while red varieties were confused with rubies until advances in mineralogy revealed their true identity.
