My journey into the diamond industry

Nangi drop symbol

My journey started as a sustainability consultant intern at Nangi. Now a new chapter begins. I have completed my master’s degree in sustainability at the University of Bergen, earning an A and the Green Scholarship. I’m now stepping fully into my career at Nangi as Communications and Sustainability Advisor, specializing in lab grown diamonds.

A master’s thesis on lab grown diamonds

My master’s thesis is called From Blood to Sustainability. It explores lab grown diamonds: how they are created, how their environmental and ethical footprint differs from mined diamonds, and what sets the two apart.

What surprised me most wasn’t the diamonds themselves. It was how little we, as consumers, have been told.

Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds. They have the same chemical composition and crystal structure as mined diamonds, and to the naked eye, they are impossible to tell apart. The difference lies in how and where they are created.

Still, this isn’t widely known. The mining industry is one of the most closed industries in the world, with long supply chains that make real transparency difficult. That’s why openness matters so much to me, and to Nangi. We believe everyone deserves to know what they are choosing between. That way, the choice is truly yours.

Want to learn more about the differences, chemically, visually, and ethically? We’ve written a dedicated guide on the subject.

Two green drops

On the cover of my thesis, I painted two green drops. Two pear-shaped diamonds, with several layers of meaning.

Green stands for the sustainable choice. But the drop is also a drop of blood, painted green. A symbol of stepping away from the darker sides of parts of the diamond industry.

The drop is also Bergen. The city where I was born and raised, known for its rain, and where I earned my master’s degree.

And the drop is Nangi. It’s our symbol, and the name Nangi means “little sister.” Not a day goes by that I don’t think of my own little sister. It means a lot to me to bring a part of her into everything I do.

The meeting that changed everything

My journey to Nangi started in August 2024, with a Teams call with Jenny about a possible internship. It was a year before the internship would begin, and two years before I would graduate.

I had worked in the jewelry industry for several years. Even so, I felt something new in that conversation. A warm feeling, like finally finding your way home.

Jenny doesn’t just run Nangi Fine Jewelry. She makes choices. Behind each one are real values, and a team that goes above and beyond for each other and for their customers.

That is what made Nangi my dream job. So when I was offered my dream position, it probably goes down in the history books as the fastest decision a Bergen native has ever made to move to Oslo.

My role at Nangi

Today, I’m the Communications and Sustainability Advisor at Nangi, specializing in lab grown diamonds. I make sure we follow all guidelines and regulations. But also that we live up to our own ambition to keep improving. Our customers make conscious choices, and they deserve the same from us. Ethics and sustainability are standards we never compromise on.

I’m also responsible for Nangi Journal, the journal you’re reading right now. Here, you should always find thorough, up-to-date information. And you should know there is a real person behind it who knows the craft.

I’m also involved in events and other projects, but if it were up to me, I’d sneak into every client meeting I could. Someone who has just decided to propose. A couple about to get married. A gift to themselves. Or someone who wants to carry the memory of a person they’ve lost. It’s an honor to be part of some of the most significant moments in people’s lives.

What makes Nangi different?

What surprised me most at Nangi was the calm. No pressure, no sales tactics. We take our time. We listen. And we let you make the informed choice yourself.

We want to be the place you return to whenever life gives you something to celebrate. An engagement, a wedding, a new family member, or something else entirely.

Five diamonds for five years

When my internship came to an end, I received a gift that still moves me: Bohemian Girl, with five lab grown diamonds. Each diamond represents one year of my bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Five years of research, doubt, and breakthroughs.

I wear the ring every day. When I look down at my hand, I see how far I’ve come. The ring holds five years of my life, and a small daily memory of why I chose this path.

The promise I carry forward

For me, From Blood to Sustainability is about more than a master’s degree or a title on a business card. It’s about a promise to every customer who leaves The Nangi House with a ring, a pendant, or a dream come true. The promise that we will always keep asking what beauty costs. For people, for the planet, and for those who will wear the jewelry after us.

It’s the same idea I painted into the two green drops. And I carry it with me in everything I do at Nangi.
